David’s Super Late, Super Snitz-y Top 23 Albums of 2010 List

January 20, 2011 3 comments

this list is not a critics list or a list made to appease anyone’s particular taste, it is totally unprofessional, opinionated and biased based on my personal taste. i only included albums i have spent a considerable amount of time listening to, i am sure there were others released last year that should make this list, but i personally did not have the pleasure of listening to them. i think these might be not only my favorite, but damn near the only albums released in 2010 that i spent a great deal of time listening to.

i find it ridiculously difficult and somewhat unnecessary to rank the albums, i could have picked any album in the top 10 as number one depending on the week or day I made the list. please pay less attention to their exact order than you normally might. i am extremely lazy when it comes to these things, so forgive my brevity in describing each…. hereitis.

radiohead prague concert dvd download

September 3, 2010 No comments yet

some crafty fans lucky bastards with some decent seats recorded the concert on some cheap cameras, radiohead approved and hooked them up with the soundboards. if you can get through to the site you can download it from the internets onto your ipods.  not the best footage but cool for how it was made and good for my people who haven’t had the pleasure to see them live. trailer for the dvd and some clips of the concert below.

a lyric video (more visually stimulating video coming soon) for the track “fuck you” from cee-lo’s upcoming lp the ladykiller. cee-lo’s post goodie career has been a productive one but if i had it my way he would still be with the goodie mostly over bullshit crew…ahh the good ol days… if you are a hip hop/rap fan and don’t know about goodie mob, well, you should.

Arcade Fire – The Suburbs (Review)

August 9, 2010 2 comments

Arcade Fire – Empty Room
Arcade Fire – Spraw II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
Arcade Fire – Suburban War
Arcade Fire – Modern Man
Arcade Fire – Month Of May

Arcade Fire is surely one of the most hyped indie bands around and has been since their debut album 2004’s “Funeral.” fittingly, there’s also been plenty of hype and press for their third (and possibly best) album Suburbs. Arcade Fire is one of those bands that have as many devoted haters as they do dedicated followers, and this serves as proof of their status as one of the most talented and original groups around. the fact is that usually the masses don’t really bother to hate shitty bands. it is comparative to the Yankees in baseball, they are good and because of this, are the most hated AND loved team in baseball. that is Arcade Fire’s spot in indie rock and with “Suburbs” they sort of win the world series, or at least a pennant.

to get in touch with david:

what was the first CD or tape that you ever bought?
proud to say the first CD i purchased with my own funds (lil bro and i actually pooled our allowance to pull this off, karma used to be on some $16.99 per CD shit, pre best buy days) was dr.dre’s the chronic. this was in early 92 or early 93 so i was about 10 or 11. mom fought us over this purchase but given the fact that it was our money and she had no clue what “chronic” meant we were allowed to buy. we went straight home and wore that album out on our cheap ass sony boom box. as far as tapes go, i have no idea. i remember getting mc hammer tapes and vanilla ice tapes for xmas and i used to keep paperboys (of the ditty fame) tape in my sock drawer.

what was the most recent CD you purchased?
the last CD i purchased was elliott smith’s self titled album or radiohead’s hail to the thief. i wanted some physical copies of these two albums as they are two of my all time favs. but it was probably 3 years ago when i purchased them. is that bad? now i just pray for music and it magically appears on my external hard drive.

describe your most memorable concert experience.
i’ve been a concert junkie the past few years. tons of shows and almost all of them have been good. just a few letdowns. it’s tough to pick the most memorable but i would have to go with lollapalooza in 2003 back when it was still a traveling festival. i attended the show with my late great best friend (who passed away 2 months later) and i remember it started storming during incubus’s set, show was delayed, we were allowed pass outs to the parking lot to go chug more beverages, storm slowed, they finished it and it was a party in the rain type moment. later another friend literally took a running start and sort of tackled his ford explorer, shattering the window. pretty memorable.

what is your biggest musical guilty pleasure?
i am having a hard time figuring out what I would be embarrassed by. maybe all the chick stuff i listen to? like feist and cat power, norah jones, lykke li? but i’m not really ashamed of them. i do have a fondness for johnny cash. really despise country except for him and willie nelson. my xm radio has been stuck on the symphony channel as of late, and i listen to books on my zune. currently relistening (did I make up a word right there?) to the universe in a nutshell by stephen hawking. guess that’s sort of embarrassing.

do you have a favorite song/artist/cd?
this is basically impossible to determine these, but i will try. if i could just listen to 3 artists and their catalogue of music (including solo efforts, and b-sides, etc.) I would take radiohead, outkast, and elliott smith, i have played the hell out of all 3 of these artists and listened to about everything they’ve ever done and although i take breaks from them i don’t go very long without going back. these would be the 3 artists I would take albums from if i were told i was going to be lost on an island (minus polar bears, smoke monsters, hatches, and what not) and could only have a few albums to listen to for my remaining days there. i give them all big points on replay value. my all time favorite song may be “god” by john lennon. so simple but so profound and in line with my personal beliefs in its message.

if you could hang out with any recording artist (dead or alive) who would you choose and why?

i would really like to pick the brains of some of these people more so than “hang” with them. but i would go with john lennon, elliott smith, and thom yorke. i think all 3 of these dudes were/are their own person in every way. seems they led more than followed and weren’t afraid to speak their mind on things, even when it didn’t agree with the popular opinion. and not too mention i consider all 3 straight genius in their respective musical areas of expertise.

Blitzen Trapper – Destroyer of the Void (Review)

Blitzen Trapper – The Tailor
Blitzen Trapper -The Man Who Would Speak True

portland-based experimental folk rock band blitzen trapper have crafted a certain sound over the course of their career and the 5 albums produced as a result all carry a certain folky, retro rock, country-tinged mountain storytelling vibe. if you have listened to their previous albums (especially furr and wild mountain nation) its no wonder they are oft compared to the likes of bob dylan, the band, and csny. they seem like a band ready to embrace these comparisons and their own spin on the tradition of americana folk rock with a southern, if not country twist at times. with destroyer of the void they bring a lot of what you would expect along with a little of the slightly unexpected, as they still try to explore their more experimental side on this record.
