Listen: Ab-Soul ft. Danny Brown & Jhené Aiko – Terrorist Threats

April 6, 2012 2 comments

Some random, yet worthy collaborations dropping on this GOOD Friday, eh? Can’t be mad about that. This one features MJF favorites Soulo, Danny and Jhené. I know for a fact that this will stay on rotation for the next few weeks. In my opinion, all three of them carry their own weight on this one. Production courtesy of Dave Free.

Watch: A-Trak, Mark Foster & Kimbra – Warrior (Video)

April 6, 2012 No comments yet

Converse is surely trying to make a statement with this 3 Arist: 1 Song series and they have just released the second track off the collection. This time, we have A-Trak on the boards with Mark from Foster the People & Kimbra, who had that song with Gotye. It starts out sounding like a really bad European remake of ‘Houdini‘ then the synths come in and all of a sudden, everything is right in the world again. The video itself features Mark in some underground nacho libre type performance, but at least Kimbra is flaunting off her voice to the side of the ring. Are you guys feeling these collaborations?

Listen: Jai Paul – Jasmine

March 30, 2012 No comments yet

Lets face it, we all thought we had heard the last of Jai Paul when he debuted BTSTU almost a year ago and ran back into hiding. Looks like he has a project with XL Records coming soon, and here is the second leak off the untitled LP. A little different, but groovy nonetheless. I predict there will be about 80 shitty remixes of it on YouTube by the end of the weekend.

Watch: Kinetics & One Love – Butterfly Effect (Video)

March 29, 2012 2 comments

Kinetics up in your headphones, and on YouTube! Frat rap intellectual superstars Kinetics & One Love have dropped the visuals for their What Model Are You stand-out track with re-recorded verses. Not sure how I feel about the change of the tone, the older version was more deep and had that Kinetics sound – but I am definitely digging this video. The true message is – everything happens for a reason. Don’t try to change the past.

Big things ahead for young Jeremy and Timmy. A debut album on the way and some big-name collaborations are to be expected. What up Jadakiss? Here is what they had to say about the song and video.

The underlying concept of the video reflects that of the song: everything that happens to us, even unfortunate events, could have unintended and even fortunate consequences later on down the line. Directed by Max Hliva and Nullah Sarker, the video explores how the difference between having your bag stolen by a stranger on the street and avoiding that stranger altogether could lead to two drastically different outcomes at the end of the day. In that same light, the lyrics of the song reference a relationship coming to an end, and how that breakup ultimately led to the writing of the song “Airplanes” and a subsequent meeting with Atlantic Records, a pivotal point in the artists’ career: “But if I could go back, I don’t think I’d go back, I wouldn’t wanna change things…I would embrace them the way you are.” Tereza Kacerova, playing the lead role in “Butterfly Effect,” expresses this sentiment by shrugging and smiling after having her bag stolen at the end of the video, almost as if she understands that this moment could be the cause of some unexpected, fortunate event in the near future.

Nardwuar takes on SXSW

March 25, 2012 1 comment

Looks like Nardwuar kept himself busy last week in Austin, Texas. Other than conducting nine interviews, he also had four gigs with his backing band The Evaporators. Hell, Andrew W.K (yes, this guy) sat in on a few of their shows. Even with his ‘Epic Meal Time‘ YouTube shorts and his grunge rock band, it is no secret that Nardwuar is best known for the intricate research of his interviewees and outlandish mannerisms. Some of my favorite interviews are by him, and the human serviette has been releasing some fresh ones of MJF favorites. Peep a few below.

Doot do la doot doot…

Watch: The Re:Generation Music Project (Full Stream)

March 21, 2012 1 comment

RE:GENERATION is a documentary sponsored by Hyundai that follows DJ Premier, Pretty Lights, Skrillex, Mark Ronson and The Crystal Method as they collaborate with the biggest past and current artists to create remixes outside of their normal genre. Not knowing that it would be freely available to stream later, I paid a few bones to see a “special screening” in a theater and it is worth the watch. I’ll list a few reasons: you’ll get to witness The Doors thrash on dubstep, DJ Premier learning how to conduct the Berklee Symphony Orchestra, Erykah Badu creating a song based on Gumbo (yes, the food) and Pretty Lights attempting to formulate sentences while noticeably out of his mind. Also, check the crafty editing on Sonny’s face – rumor has it that he paid big money to polish up his acne for the big screen.

Anyway, peep the movie if you are interested in seeing where the music industry is heading – and download the featured tracks here!

B.o.B – Where Are You

March 19, 2012 4 comments

For the fourth single off Strange Clouds, Bobby Ray decides to spit some inner thoughts over a melodically filled piano beat. First, Wiz apologizes for Rolling Papers, now we get this. I guess some rappers just need a hug in 2012. Are you guys still giving B.o.B a chance or is he a lost cause?

For those that are standing by him, Strange Clouds drops May 1st. Purchase the single here.

We are excited to be partnered with them and will be covering the festival this year. Hilltop Hoods – Living in Bunkers (ft. Black Thought & Lotek)

March 13, 2012 No comments yet

I got familiar with Hilltop Hoods a few years ago when a friend who studied abroad in Aussieland introduced me to them as one of the biggest hip hop acts in the land down under. I gave them a shot and wasn’t too impressed, but saw that they released a new LP with features from Black Thought and Chali 2na. Minus the corny beat, this song goes – and per usual, Thought just comes in with the kill.

Any of you junkfoodies ever been to Australia before? Hope to get down there one day, preferably when it’s winter in the US.

RAC – I Don’t Wanna Know (ft. Liz Anjos)

March 11, 2012 2 comments

We all already know that Remix Artist Collective are pretty much untouchable when it comes to their highly praised production and remixes, and in celebration of reaching 15K fans on facebook they dropped a Phil Collins cover with Liz. Word is that they have an official album on the way soon with collaborations of artists that they remixed, which is crazy to think about. Catch them over at the Green Label Sound tent if you’re lucky enough to be around SXSW this week!

Here is what they had to say about the track.

Something I’ve held on to for years was the notion that songs come first. A good song is a good song no matter what arrangement it comes in. We try to convey that in every remix and every cover. A lot of people are too good for the cheesy 80’s pop arrangements of Phil Collins but underneath it all, it’s pretty great songwriting.
