The Wonderful World of Roses Gabor (Vol. 1)

February 2, 2012 No comments yet

Roses Gabor is featured on SBTRKT’s album and I am more than willing to listen to any music from his guest vocalists, (read: Sampha and Jessie Ware). Now, this is the first time I’m hearing any of Roses’ solo work but from her performance on “Pharaohs,” a mixtape is not what I expected because that’s not really typical fashion for a female vocalist. I mean all of this in the best way possible and after listening to “The Wonderful World of Roses Gabor,” I’d agree that a mixtape was the best vehicle for Gabor to highlight her versatility. You’ll hear her lush vocals on solo tracks and hooks but the part I was most surprised to hear was she also dabbles in rapping, and she’s definitely not bad. Roses has the capacity to take her career in a number of directions so I’m curious to see where she ends up.

mattMiGGZ – Rich Off a MiGGZ Tape (Instrumental Mixtape)

January 31, 2012 No comments yet

Backhand Fam and occasional Aer producer MiGGZ just released his newest mixtape yesterday, and he’s definitely moving into a more comfortable and stylized direction here. He must officially be trying to make money in the game, as there are a sprinkling of songs without samples on this release. Everything is crisper than usual. Clean drums, clean samples, less distortion, less reverb. An odd path to take considering the recent popularity of indistinguishable reverb from producers like Clams Casino and AraabMuzik, but respectable nonetheless.

MiGGZ – Crunchy
MiGGZ – This Way
MiGGZ – Get It

The mixtape is available for download here

Sam Champ – D’Angelo Live Mixtape

January 30, 2012 No comments yet

Okayplayer recruited Sam Champ to curate this amazing collection of live D’Angelo recordings and it is put together seamlessly. D’Angelo’s perfect soulful voice accompanied by his extremely talented live band makes for some ideal entertainment. As you may probably know by now, D’Angelo is currently touring Europe and the videos of his shows keep on coming and he definitely still more than has it. The live performances of late have garnered so much hype, hopefully this means the long awaited comeback album will be out sooner rather than later this year. This mix is most likely the best thing you’ll hear today and if you aren’t that familiar with D’Angelo’s work (gasp) it’s a great introductory piece, so get to listening.

Vinny Cha$e – Survival Of The Swag

January 29, 2012 3 comments

Ok so both the name ‘Vinny Cha$e’ & ‘Survival Of The Swag’ are kinda lame. But Harlem’s Vinny Cha$e makes a strong case for being one to watch, joined here by Theophilus London, Lex Luger, Soulja Boy & others. All praises due to Based Belarmino for putting me on. Check out the video for ‘Belong To The City’ and download Survival Of The Swag below. You can stream the tape at MixStream, but my cosign should have been enough to convince you to cop.

Alex James – A New Dope (Mixtape)

Alex James A New Dope

Charleston, SC, native Alex James dropped his debut album a few days ago and I’ve had this in rotation amidst Phony Ppl and Nehru Jackets. As a South Carolinian, I enjoy hearing cats from my neck of the woods make dope music. Production on this is top-notch, as well. Though his delivery isn’t always perfect, Alex has a perfect voice for rap: clear and inviting. I personally think he sounds better on slower, more soulful beats like “Camaro, All Black.” Plus, A New Dope is an homage to Star Wars: A New Hope, and I can fuck with that since I have over 300 Star Wars action figures and shit that I’ve collected since I was younger (ACTION FIGURES NOT DOLLS!!!!). Sample and Download it For Free Below. Shouts to all my 2-1B Medic Droids out there.

Jay Curry’s 3|4 Mix

January 23, 2012 2 comments

For those not keeping score, 3|4 is my personal favorite music & money-making crew in the biz. Besides Odd Future (who you might have read about somewhere), there’s the fingerblast anthems of ndeluv, the extra-terrestrial musings from NYC’s cosmonaut Tidus, Phlo Finister‘s own brand of genre & style-bending music, the organic poetry-soul flows of SF’s The Jealous Guys, Bass Drum Of Death‘s Mississippi brand of rock’n'roll, Georgia rock trio’s Crass Mammoth‘s avant garde sounds & newcomer Terence Ryan‘s rising star.

Not to be overlooked, 3|4 artist Jay Curry (who has must-hear collaborations with Phlo & The Jealous Guys) curated this 38-minute mix as an introduction to the deepest bench in music. Look for his own album Jordan’s Secret Stuff coming this year.

3|4 Mix track listing:
Tidus: Whoa
The Jealous Guys: Walking Around
Domo Genesis: Cashmere
ndeluv: #hoodmusic
Tyler, the Creator: Bastard
Crass Mammoth: Punctures
Terence Ryan: Vocal Layout
Phlo Finister: Shades
Tidus: Welcome
MellowHype: Strip Club
ndeluv: Never Been
Mike G: Carrera (prod. Jay Curry)
Phlo Finister: Wrong # (prod. Jay Curry)
The Jealous Guys: Brainwash by London
Jay Curry: Susie Q’s
The Jealous Guys: Life (prod. Jay Curry)
