Interview: Chatting with Dean & Ravo

May 31, 2011 No comments yet

Been too long since I post (employment will do that to you), but here’s something I got to do a couple weeks ago while I was still funemployed.

Dean & Ravo – you may have seen them on MJF or heard one of their songs off of A to B – are a hip pop duo who’ve entered the scene this year. What’s cool about them is that in addition to their hip hop beats, they have a great voice that I got to listen to in a spontaneous session post our interview. Bottom line, their songs are infectious and are easy on the ears. The guys themselves share a brotherly bond and I’m a sucker for guys that appreciate the deliciousness of swedish fish). Check out the interview above.

ps follow Dean and Ravo on Twitter and Like them on Facebook.

The White Rhino: Changing the Game

May 23, 2011 6 comments

The White Rhino – Underwater by DOS Entertainment

Julian Rhine, aka The White Rhino, is a Brooklyn based hip-hop artist, though I wouldn’t call what he does hip hop per-se. Rather, he seems to transcend genres, fuse worlds together, and pioneer a new style that one might call “electro-pop-hop.” Or you can just call it hip-hop.

This guy is as rare as the creature to which his name is an homage. The White Rhino produces his own beats and writes his own lyrics. His EP, Just the Tip, and his self-titled debut album burst onto the scenes last December, showcasing his eclectic musical tastes. Check out the tunes in this post, and if you like what you hear you can check out his website and get the EP here, just hit the download button.

The Rhino was generous enough to give me a few minutes of time for a one-on-one interview. After talking with him, I feel like “ridiculous” is a good word to describe him. Keep in mind that the best rappers are pretty ridiculous.

What The Fuck Is A Childish Gambino?

March 8, 2011 10 comments

It’s 12:30 am on a Wednesday night, and you’re willfully engaged in a Social Media Time Suck. You’ve already logged into Facebook earlier, and masturbated…, errm, crept on your ex-gf’s new photos from her trip to the beach to visit her “bestie.”

So, you move to MySpace, but you forgot your password, and, after several failed attempts, your account gets locked.

The last and final move is to Twitter. Hoping to attract new followers, you check the trending topics in hopes of flexing your wit for the mindless masses. You scan the list, and mixed amongst the ubiquitous tags about Jo Bros, Beliebers, Korean Boy Band Fans and some variation of “Stuff Black People Do” you see it… Two words that catch your eye: “Childish Gambino”.

Much like when you see or hear anything related to “Chris Webby,” your first instinct is confusion.

“What the fuck is a Childish Gambino?” You ejaculate loudly.

Kevin Abstract – Fly Away
Kevin Abstract – Fairweather Friends
Kevin Abstract – Lies
Kevin Abstract – Letters To Juliet
Kevin Abstract – All I Do (ft. Dre)

I love putting people onto new music (obviously). That’s the primary thing a blogger does. We get hundreds of submissions from aspiring artists every day. It’s hard to keep on top of all of them. I think it took me 3 weeks to get around to 14-year-old Kevin Abstract from Corpus Christi’s submission. He said he came across mjf searching for Odd Future and I thought that was pretty cool. Turns out his music is really dope. Fresh & original. At only 14 he definitely has a very bright future ahead. When we posted his mixtape The Comics, people really fell in love with his unique sound. We had to hit him up and ask him more questions to bring you more info on this upcoming artist. Remember, mostly junkfood taught you. mostly junkfood taught you WELL

Exclusive Mostly Junk Food Interview With Chino Maurice in NYC | VIDEO

December 19, 2010 7 comments

after the overwhelming positive response to last week’s post on NYC troubador Chino Maurice, we decided to approach his management to arrange an interview. Known for hanging around super models, we thought it best to send contributor Laura Rose to get inside his head and find out who Chino is.

Laura talked to him about his video for “Luna,” working with artists like Beyonce and his upcoming national tour opening for N.E.R.D.

this has been stuck in my head since I heard it.

my day with(out) The Pack

August 23, 2010 1 comment

sorry this took so long… it’s wordy, prepare yourselves

So remember when i was really excited to go do my first big girl interview with The Pack?

Well I got to meet with Young L, but unfortunately the others were unable to attend…

Here’s roughly how the interview went down:

I found L wandering through the lobby of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. I sort of crept up behind him and was like “Hi… you’re in The Pack right?” (it’s tattooed on his arm.) He says yes and I tell him I was supposed to meet with them an hour and a half prior to do an interview.  I let him use my phone bc he dropped his in the toilet while he was texting from the shower (don’t try that at home kiddies) and he hadn’t been in contact with anyone all morning, hence him coming down to the lobby to use the house phone (maybe the Biltmore doesn’t have phones in the rooms, whoknooowssswhocaaaaressss?)  Anyway once things were settled he said he had time to sit down and talk for a minute.  Score!  Unfortunately I was so nervous and confused and awkward (we were just sitting there in a busy lobby) that I didn’t get the actual interview on camera, I just took notes like a stupid high school bio student.
