Well, he made good on his promise. J. Cole decided to tease everyone with arguably the most anticipated song off The Sideline Story: the obligatory and expected Jay-Z feature. Pretty smart move giving the people the one song they would have probably bought as a single off iTunes if they didn’t buy your album. But, it seems like a decent tactic: Get Interest and Buzz Back Up. Get People Talking About J. Cole Again.

I’ve been a critic of Cole for the last 4 months because I believe his marketing plan has been gahbage. Perfect time to have dropped an album would have been like a month or two after Friday Night Lights (Kind of how Wale’s 11.1.11 mixtape is a perfect teaser for his Ambition album). Plus, those Any Given Sunday offerings have been stale and trite. I want Jermaine to succeed. I really do. But hey… who am I kidding? You guys aren’t reading this. Ok, Mr. Sauce, I’ll play along and comment. I am cautiously optimistic about this release. My concern is that J. Cole struggles, in my eyes, with making “pop-rap” songs. I know the comparison between J. Cole being the next Nas has been played to death but if J. Cole is to create the “classic” album that he wants then I feel that it needs to be out of the vein of Illmatic. By that I mean that it just needs to be 13 or songs of him just straight spitting. Forget the hooks and stuff. This song is fine. I’ll bump it. I enjoy it. But there needs to be a distinct change in direction between this and the rest of the album in my opinion. Otherwise, J. Cole may be on the path to becoming more of the next Fabolous than Nas or Jay. There is nothing wrong with that. I enjoy Fab. But he’s not Nas or Jay.

On point, Cedric. He shines on storytelling & black youth struggle tracks. Better than ANYONE doing it right now. “Lost Ones” and “Lights Please” are prime examples. I thought his work on Wale’s Bad Girl Club was admirable, and I low key enjoyed that.

The thing that bothers me with Cole is that he works alone. I don’t see him with a “crew” like Wale and MMG or Kendrick and Ab-Soul/Jay Rock. He doesn’t have anyone pushing him. He doesn’t have that competition factor. He works in a vacuum, and the results recently have been stale/uninspired/same ol same ol. He is the Eeyore of the rap game. He’s so focused on getting his name out as a producer (Beats are decent, nothing special, though HiiiPoWer was a heat rock [but partially due to KL's spitting/concept]) and he’s not focusing on what he needs to do to develop as an artist. 2009 Cole is the same as 2011 Cole. Plain and simple.

That Nas analogy you gave is probably the best commentary. I’m almost certain the reason his album was delayed for so long is because “they” want a “Trey Songz featured Radio Song. We need more pop appeal. More Radio singles. More Teenbop.” That’s not him. Never will be. Friday Night Lights is a perfect example of that “Make an Illmatic” mindset. FNL was beyond dope, replay value out the wazoo, rhymes, beats, everything was beautifully done. Just too bad is was released November of last year.

I agree completely the buzz has died n now ppl are talking flop…..imo this is some of the wackest shit Cole has ever released…….i was a HUUUUGE Cole fan from 08 til now. IDK what’s going on but i know it can be fixed. but Gambino is my interim #1 right now

Gambino is hella nice. However, he’s content is repetitive. All songs are flex, clever wordplay-laden songs. He has beyond dope taste in beats/production (That’s because he has a COMPOSER that helps him with them) and an amazing ability to create phenomenal hooks. However, his novelty will wear off if he doesn’t start making some storytelling tracks or something new beyond the “Wasn’t cool, now I fuck bitches, My Dick is big” songs that he makes now.

Yeah I also agree with that, but I feel that if he spreads his music out between releases like does (mainly because he’s busy) his sound may be the perfect mix for music. But I would like to hear him venture out in to those types of songs, storytelling is my main reason for listening to music. But i also don’t want him to rush it and skip parts of the story which i felt J. Cole did in “Lost Ones”.

This song is ASS! Like straight up and down… I heard his next single with Trey Songz and I actually like it cuz Trey doesn’t say “C’mon” or “Yuuuup” or even do a run on the track. But this shit right here nigga…prolly the worst J.Cole song I’ve ever heard…

problem with cole is that he has soo much presure on him to make a classic that it becomes hard to live up to the hype. for years hes been called the future of rap but i dont think he ever will be now. k. dot come in with half the hype about being next on top and imo made the best album ive heard this year, still gets a full spin once a week. cole will be stuck in the middle, half trying to shift digits half between making the real rap album he and most of the blogs want. he will sell less then 100k first week and it will be a top 20 maybe 10 rap album of the year
