For the last week, the only thing I’ve been listening to (And I’m sure the same goes for you guys) is Frank Ocean’s debut album, Channel Orange. And even though it was released over a month ago, “Pyramids” is still one of my favorite songs off of Orange.
The fact that Frank blended two songs together to form 9:56 of aural beauty showed that he puts his artistry over the quest for radio play. He didn’t format it for radio, which I thought was both different and innovative…until this week.
I was sitting at work the other day listening to The Dream’s Love King when the remix to “Sex Intelligent” rolled into my headphones directly after “Sex Intelligent” part one. At that very moment, I realized that “Pyramids” was modeled in the same exact fashion as Terius’ 9:13 song sequence (Track 4 & 5).
Now don’t get me wrong, I still think “Pyramids” is a dope ass record. I’m also aware that The Dream bites Prince’s sound on damn near every track he makes. Still, I couldn’t help but notice the similarity between the two songs.
What do you guys think, though? Was Frankie imitating The Dream or was it just a coincidence? Also, are there other songs formatted in this fashion?
