Maybach Music Group Presents Self Made Vol. 1 (Stream)

Like him or not (I fall in the latter), Rick Ross has built quite the formidable hip-hop team. Call them the second generation G-Unit, or Young Money sans the annoying chick (and Canadian crooner). But, Maybach Music Group, or MMG, is Ross’ startup label and enlists the likes of Wale (the least interesting MC here, by my account), southern snarler Pill, and former Philly battle-rapper Meek Mill for their first release under the new moniker.

Frankly, I’m not much of a fan of anyone involved here, but it must be noted that Ross has impeccable taste in beats and laces his young team members with production that makes them sound a hell of a lot more important than they have in past releases. i was hype on the album the first few listens but i quickly lost interest. i’ll agree that Wale isn’t especially compelling, but I still think he outshines Meek & Pill (who have some AWFUL moments on this). Ross’s adlibs, the production and the mmmmaybach music lady are standouts obviously

CyHi Da Prynce is boring as fuck, I’m sorry. The Jadakiss feature made me think he should be on MMG over one of those dudes. Like Lox 2.0 with Rozay

Lox 2.0 is one of the best ideas that could ever possibly come out of this discussion haha. And I don’t “hate” Wale, but Mixtape About Nothing was just sooooooo good, and everything after that has just been sooooooo underwhelming that I sort of hold something else against him. Call it biased. I like Pill more on southern trap joints vs. a lot of the overproduced (though appropriately expensive) beats that show up on all of Ross’ releases. And Meek, as always, sounds like he’s trying so much harder than anyone else to get, borderline, average results.

I feel you on the CyHi jab too. So far I’m not digging MMG, Young Money, or G.O.O.D. Music that much. Shame.
