with the dull brass instrument charming a basket of cobras”
I first started following Doc Waffles when I saw him battling in Grind Time a few years ago ago. I was instantly a fan. His off-kilter demeanor and wide-ranging references had me hooked. I started to dig into his discography and found out he’s been doing this for a decade. The 30-year old rapper is reinforcing the newer ideology that Danny Brown, Action Bronson, 2 Chainz et al have recently made a case for: “Rap isn’t necessarily a young man’s game anymore.”
His song “From Mysteries” off of his album Seizure Suit Farms is one of my personal top 20 favorite songs of all time. Self-described as “experimental hip-hop,” admittedly, he’s not for everyone, and not everyone is going to “get it.” But, the combination of soulful, jazzy samples, intricate rhyme schemes and a playful delivery creates a cohesive project that is sure to please many of you out there. Download and listen below. The album has a “Name Your Own Price” option so if you only have $0 to give, you can. Leave some comments and let us know what you think.
