Smothered & Covered: Kanye West – “Mercy”

Since Cruel Summer has been delayed until never the fall, I figured I would dedicate today’s Smothered & Covered to one of the tracks we’ve heard from the album. This edition features a cover of hit single “Mercy,” and is brought to you by a LA producer/rapper named Terrace Martin.

If you’ve never heard of Martin, he has quite the resume. The young musician has already produced beats for artists like Snoop Dogg, Talib Kweli, and Kendrick Lamar, and he’s also released a few EPs and mixtapes of his own. Check out his dope interpretation of “Mercy” below.

Terrace Martin – Mercy (Jazz Edition)

To borrow a line from the always quotable Jay-Z, “It’s so muhfuckin’ soulful man.” I would’ve never expected “Mercy” to translate so well as a jazz number, but it does. I’d actually like to hear a version that incorporates the verses because it’d probably make the version of the track that much more enjoyable. Even so, Martin kills the sax solos, and I actually look forward to checking out some of his other work.

If you would like to hear more from Terrace Martin, you can check him out on Twitter or here more covers here.
