what was the first CD or tape that you ever bought?
proud to say the first CD i purchased with my own funds (lil bro and i actually pooled our allowance to pull this off, karma used to be on some $16.99 per CD shit, pre best buy days) was dr.dre’s the chronic. this was in early 92 or early 93 so i was about 10 or 11. mom fought us over this purchase but given the fact that it was our money and she had no clue what “chronic” meant we were allowed to buy. we went straight home and wore that album out on our cheap ass sony boom box. as far as tapes go, i have no idea. i remember getting mc hammer tapes and vanilla ice tapes for xmas and i used to keep paperboys (of the ditty fame) tape in my sock drawer.

what was the most recent CD you purchased?
the last CD i purchased was elliott smith’s self titled album or radiohead’s hail to the thief. i wanted some physical copies of these two albums as they are two of my all time favs. but it was probably 3 years ago when i purchased them. is that bad? now i just pray for music and it magically appears on my external hard drive.

describe your most memorable concert experience.
i’ve been a concert junkie the past few years. tons of shows and almost all of them have been good. just a few letdowns. it’s tough to pick the most memorable but i would have to go with lollapalooza in 2003 back when it was still a traveling festival. i attended the show with my late great best friend (who passed away 2 months later) and i remember it started storming during incubus’s set, show was delayed, we were allowed pass outs to the parking lot to go chug more beverages, storm slowed, they finished it and it was a party in the rain type moment. later another friend literally took a running start and sort of tackled his ford explorer, shattering the window. pretty memorable.

what is your biggest musical guilty pleasure?
i am having a hard time figuring out what I would be embarrassed by. maybe all the chick stuff i listen to? like feist and cat power, norah jones, lykke li? but i’m not really ashamed of them. i do have a fondness for johnny cash. really despise country except for him and willie nelson. my xm radio has been stuck on the symphony channel as of late, and i listen to books on my zune. currently relistening (did I make up a word right there?) to the universe in a nutshell by stephen hawking. guess that’s sort of embarrassing.

do you have a favorite song/artist/cd?
this is basically impossible to determine these, but i will try. if i could just listen to 3 artists and their catalogue of music (including solo efforts, and b-sides, etc.) I would take radiohead, outkast, and elliott smith, i have played the hell out of all 3 of these artists and listened to about everything they’ve ever done and although i take breaks from them i don’t go very long without going back. these would be the 3 artists I would take albums from if i were told i was going to be lost on an island (minus polar bears, smoke monsters, hatches, and what not) and could only have a few albums to listen to for my remaining days there. i give them all big points on replay value. my all time favorite song may be “god” by john lennon. so simple but so profound and in line with my personal beliefs in its message.

if you could hang out with any recording artist (dead or alive) who would you choose and why?

i would really like to pick the brains of some of these people more so than “hang” with them. but i would go with john lennon, elliott smith, and thom yorke. i think all 3 of these dudes were/are their own person in every way. seems they led more than followed and weren’t afraid to speak their mind on things, even when it didn’t agree with the popular opinion. and not too mention i consider all 3 straight genius in their respective musical areas of expertise.
