Sweet Chin Music: Wrestling References in Hip-Hop Music

As a kid, Monday was probably my favorite day of the week. Not because I loved school or anything, but because Monday nights always meant one thing–wrestling. I swear I was the biggest wrestling nerd in the world. I knew all the theme songs, practiced all the signature moves and even had a pair of Heartbreak Kid boxers that I wore whenever Shawn Michaels had a match (which was every week). You couldn’t tell me I wasn’t bad ass walking into class and telling my teacher to “Suck it” without verbally saying a word. Back then, I didn’t want to be a music journalist or famous football player. My only career aspiration as a kid was to be the youngest member of DX. Clearly that didn’t happen.

Yesterday my mom had a yard sale and asked me to help out by selling some of my old toys. I obliged and pulled out my old Razor Scooter and Goosebumps books for the kids to give a once-over. My mom went behind me and pulled out my old WWF action figures and asked if I still wanted them or could they go out for sale. I hesitated, but then decided they could go. Although I have fond memories of legendary bathtub matches between Flash Funk and Road Dogg Jesse James, I honestly haven’t thought about those toys since I found out what breasts taste like. They eventually all wound up being sold in one swoop to a little kid who probably won’t even recognize the original Rocky Maivia figurine in the light blue speedo. My mom had just sold my childhood away. I fought back some thug tears until she handed me the money. Those action figures ended up paying for my Dom Kennedy and Casey Veggies concert ticket. Thank you Hip-Hop Gods for collaborating with the Macho Man on that one.

Speaking of Hip-Hop, there’s a good amount of emcees dropping wrestling references in their 16′s. Hit the jump to peep a list of my 10 personal favorites…”OOOOOOH YEEEAAAHHH!”

6) Drake ft. Lil’ Wayne & Kid Kid “Stunt Hard”

9) Fabolous ft. Freck Billionaire “Roger That” (Freestyle)

“I DDT the pussy, I’m Jake the Snake to you. I put ‘em in the coffin, I’m the Undertaker too.” -Fabolous

I saved this next one for last because it’s my favorite wrestling reference in a rap song. It’s nothing super deep or witty, but it’s the very first line of the first verse and it’s just a gangsta ass way to come on a track. Plus, it’s near and dear to my heart because they played it in the clubs at my school down in Florida every night. I could see the wrestler mentioned in the song using it as his theme music too.

10) USDA (Young Jeezy, Blood Raw & Slick Pulla) “Quickie”

“You know me, I aint even gon’ sweat ‘er. Ric Flair…stay jumpin’ off the dresser.” -Blood Raw
