[THE TENS] 10 GREATEST COLLABORATIVE HIP HOP ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

August 5, 2011 1 comment

Great read spotted over at The Teens. In lieu of Watch The Throne, what are some of your favorite hip hop collaborative albums? I was just thinking about CRS (the would-be early-throne-observing trio of Pharrell, Kanye West & Lupe Fiasco) the other day. I’d probably rather have a Pharrell/Kanye album than Pharrell/Jay-Z at this point. Sorry Hov. Click here to read their picks. Hey I think you guys missed R. Kelly & Jay-Z….JIGGA KELLY NOT GUILTY!!!!

“Remember Rappin Duke, Da Ha Da Ha?” Do you? Do you really? Biggie did

On Check Ya Footnotes, hip-hop heads will now be able to uncover the references embedded in some of rap’s most well known tracks. Put together by DJ Raize and spanning from 50 Cent to Patti Labelle, Eminem to 3rd Base, Check Ya Footnotes reveals the dopely interconnected world of classic hip-hop like no other project before it.

Much respect to Sunny Day ENT. This incredibly dope mixtape was obviously a labor of love. Some of these original references I have not hear before. This is a must for anyone who considers themselves a Hip Hop Historian. This is more of a college thesis than a mixtape. YOU MUST LEARN (c) KRS One

The Jews and Hip Hop: A Forever Thing | FRIDAY RUNZEL-ISM (Holiday Edition)

December 24, 2010 1 comment

Drake-Light Up (ft. Jay-Z)

“Seriously, I have a lot of respect for the Jews. They came to this country with nothing, they lived in their own communities and had their businesses and supported each other and built themselves up.” – Suge Knight to his future publicist Jonathon Wolfson at the Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, California

Jews and Hip Hop. They go together like Matzah and Nutella. Jews and Hip Hop go back like fo’ flats on a Cadillac… or four cups of wine during the Seder. Some would describe the relationship between Judaism and Hip Hop as one of exploitation and manipulation. Though icons like Professor Griff of Public Enemy, The Clipse, Jay Z and Ghostface have each shared anti-Semitic sentiments in the past, the trend is to the opposite. Jewish businessmen, entrepreneurs, and hip hop enthusiasts were an integral part in the development of hip Hop becoming the cultural and economic phenomenon it is today. Many Jewish Hip Hop executives were in even in Rap groups at one time, (Paul Rosenberg, Eminem’s manager was known as MC Paul Bunyan of the Rhythm Cartel).

Here are a list of Jews that made a longstanding contribution to the growth of Hip Hop:
Beastie Boys – After 20+ years in the Hip Hop industry the Beastie Boys are still relevant enough to headline major music festivals such as Lollapalooza, Osheaga, and Bonnaroo
Rick Rubin – Co-President of Columbia Records, Co-Founder of Def Jam Records, original DJ for the Beastie Boys, MTV called him “the most important producer of the last 20 years”
Lyor Cohen – North American Chairman and CEO of Recorded Music for Warner Music Group, integral in the growth of Def Jam records, Island Records, Roc-A-Fella Records, and Lost Highway Records and its artists (including the Beastie Boys, Foxy Broen, LL Cool J, Nas, Run DMC, Mariah Carey, P Diddy, and Jay Z)
Drake – Half-Jewish Canadian, his first album Thank Me Later debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. His first name is Aubrey. Irrelevant, but worth noting.
Steve Rifkind – Founder and Chairman of Loud records, assisted in the development of the Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, Akon, David Banner, Asher Roth, Joell Ortiz, and Big Pun
David Mays – Co-Founder of The Source Magazine
Jonathon Schecter – Co-Founder of The Source Magazine
Asher Roth – half Jewish recording artist, nominated for Best New Artist for the MTV Video Music Awards
Jonathon Wolfson – Visited Mule Creek State Prison and convinced Suge Knight to hire him as a publicist, their relationship lasted six years. also has worked with T-Pain, Wu-tang, and DMX
Paul Rosenberg – Eminem’s manager, Co-Founder of Shady Records, also has worked with Three 6 Mafia and The Knux
Yosef Robinson – deceased, converted Orthodox Jew, author of “Jamaican Hip Hopper turn Orthodox Jew”
Michael Selverne – Entertainment lawyer for the Fugees, India Arie, and Wyclef Jean, corporate counsel to Vibe Records
Remedy – MC and affiliate to the Wu-Tang Clan (appearing on “Never Again” off of “The Swarm” album, owns and runs Code Red Entertainment (which released Cappadonna’s “The Struggle” album)
Jimmy Iovine – Chairman of Interscope-Geffen-A&M, credited with giving Eminem’s demo tape to Dr. Dre, executive producer of films “8 Mile” and “Get Rich or Die Tryin’”
Ted Fields – heir to the Marshal Fields fortune, Co-Founder of Interscope Records

L’Chaim to all from the Mostly Junk Food Family! We wish you a safe and happy holiday.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzAS8tnxx2o&feature=related

out now on Fat Beats, Roc did all the production on RocMarc himself and the ensuing record sounds like 1994. pure, un-distilled and unadulterated Hip Hop music. listening to RocMarc makes me feel like i’m taking my first breath of air after living in a plastic bag for several years. the movie interludes are on some DOOM shit, but the lyrics and production are on some Sean P and Wu-Tang. send it up

BONUS:
Roc Marciano – Thug’s Prayer

this is some of the craziest shit i’ve heard in a long time. thanks to Will for putting me on
