Maryland native and L.A. transplant, Wax, has teamed up with The DJ Booth to release Eviction Notice, inspired by Wax’s real-life eviction. Wax is hands-down one of the best rapping songwriters. He can rap about any topic comprehensively and craft a catchy hook that infinitely increases its replay value. Guest features include Jes Hudak, Gotham Green, Dumbfoundead and Herbal T with production by Wax, the beat wunderkind EOM, Nobody Famous, Quickie Mart, The Fyre Dept, Sam Barsh (of Palter Ego), Lack of Afro and Greg Wells.
Whereas his Scrublife Mixtape displayed more of his Sublime, sing-song qualities, I feel like Eviction Notice puts more of a focus on his inimitable rapping ability. Wax’s gift and curse is that he is almost too diverse. He can go from singing an acoustic ballad to nimbly stringing together six-syllable rhyme schemes. Does he try to amass a fan base by going after Pop radio? Alternative Rock radio? Urban Radio? His music easily fits into any these molds, but when each song has a different and distinct sound it would be difficult to release multiple singles on the same charts. He makes great music, but without a clear stance on “what music” he represents, it’ll be tough for him to be accepted commercially.
Regardless… the future seems bright for him with another stellar project under his belt, and MJF will continue to support him.
