Zebra katz – Ima Read from Mad Decent on Vimeo.
The universe is trying to tell me something. Earlier today bnease and bauce were talking about an online book club, which led me to make the above suggestion. Later in the day I noticed Azealia Banks tweeting “IMA READ IMA READ IMA READ” but I assumed she was making up her own lyrics to that Black Eyed Peas song…boy was I wrong.
Well, Gorilla vs. Bear exposed the real inspiration for Azealia’s tweet and I can’t not like it. The obscure video in combination with the aforementioned circumstance, Zebra Katz’s deep voice, and the harsh lyrics that make reference to academics pulled me in at first listen. ‘IMA READ’ is off of Zebra Katz’s debut release on Mad Decent’s Jeffree’s Imprint, which also includes a number of remixes and one other single entitled ‘Hey Ladies.’ Mad Decent taught me that “‘reading’ is an old voguing term describing someone verbally insulting an opponent about something not so apparent to the average viewer,” but I can still pretend the song is about books.
I should also point out that Katz started a personal page to raise money for the charity, Room to Read.
